Digital Skills Award, Finalist, 2017

A partnership of 70 years of collective experience

One Digital is a unique digital skills partnership that has successfully worked with more than 11,000 people across the UK.

“I got a job! Because of the help the Digital Champion gave me. When I got the  job I went in to see him and thanked him for his help. I can’t thank him enough.”

One Digital has shown how working together on a big scale with technology can really improve digital skills, both now and into the future.

Over 12 months the One Digital partners collectively recruited and trained 1,179 Digital Champions across the UK. They also supported 11,025 people improve their digital skills and supported 555 organisations. They met and exceeded all expectations.

Supported by an investment from the Big Lottery Fund, One Digital was a national partnership of six organisations – Age UK, Affinity Sutton, AbilityNet, Citizens Online, Digital Unite and Scottish Council of Voluntary Organisation.

Each organisation represented a different section of society, who face digital inclusion barriers – older people, young adults, those with accessibility issues, rural dweller and third-sector organisations and their beneficiaries.

With more than 70 years’ collective experience in digital inclusion the Partners pooled their reach, expertise and skills to achieve a greater impact in the delivery of digital skills.

“The UK continues to face a digital skills crisis, with the profound benefits of being online – communicating, searching, transacting, problem solving and staying safe – are not being reaped by over 11 million adults. Around 5 million have never used the internet,” said Kathy Valdes, Digital Unite.

“Now is a critical time for those at the coalface of digital inclusion support to come together and collaborate with a shared vision and shared investment to provide solutions that can adapt, proliferate and sustain.”

The Partners know that empowering and inspiring local people to be Digital Champions is a highly effective way to deliver digital skills.  With 77% of those offline saying their main barrier is a lack of interest, and another 26% of computer beginners needing ongoing help, Digital Champions have a large part to play in changing attitudes.
