Finalist, Tech4Good for Africa Award, 2021

iJusticeHub is developing low-cost digital solutions to generate a scalable justice tool which improves access to justice for citizens in Tanzania. African women working in front of a hutBy partnering with local legal service providers, iJusticeHub supports their work by providing mobile phone-based tools that increase justice service provision in Tanzania, and beyond. These are affordable, accessible, and scalable justice tools which are available on a mobile phone and as a web application.

iJusticeHub is in the process of developing a low fidelity prototype legal support application which will be available on a mobile phone and will continue to develop this tool in partnership with local legal advice centres in Tanzania. By developing bespoke digital solutions, and working in partnership with existing justice providers, iJusticeHub will provide a bridge across the justice gap to improve citizens lives in Tanzania and beyond.

Founded by Sarah Stephens, a UK lawyer working in alternative models of justice service delivery in Tanzania, iJusticeHub is embedded in partnerships with local advice centres which form a working group for developing and improving the justice tool.

As a vulnerable group with specific justice needs, the ongoing development and improvement of the tool involves women justice seekers, to ensure that their requirements are at the heart of the service design. The tool will provide the opportunity for women to gain agency over their justice needs by giving them the tools to claim their legal rights to inheritance, child maintenance, home ownership and to challenge underage and unlawful marriage.

This tech solution makes a novel and significant contribution to the fields of justice, technology, and human development, with measurable benefits for individual justice seekers. Working with justice providers in Tanzania this project builds on local expertise to build a tool which is locally owned and developed, keeping the needs of the justice seeker at the heart of the design. The low-cost tech platform will provide affordable, effective, and sustainable justice services which are scalable across Tanzania and to other countries.
