App to help blind and partially-sighted people find their way around

Finalist category: Youth Award

Winner, Youth Award, 2013

This award was a competition for young people from across the country to submit their ideas for how they would use digital technology to make the world a better place.

It was sponsored by BT and supported by Amey, Barclays, Fujitsu and Installation Technology

Entries opened in September 2012 and six finalists were chosen by the judging panel just before Christmas.

Each group was then paired with mentors from businesses and charities and given three months to prepare a pitch for a Dragon’s Den-style final that was held at Windsor Castle in April 2013.

Each team had to persuade the Dragons to invest £5,000 in their idea. They had to explain their idea and who it would benefit and then prepare a business plan to show what they would do if they won the investment.

A very tense final was won by Insight, a team from Mexborough School in Doncaster who designed an app to help blind and partially-sighted people find their way around using local landmarks.
