Comic Relief tackles poverty in sub-Saharan AfricaWe’re delighted to announce that Comic Relief has joined us to create a new Tech4Good for Africa Award. This new Award will show the many ways that digital tech, mobile phones and the internet are transforming lives across sub-Saharan Africa. It also means that Tech4Good is taking a step on to the global stage for the first time.

Comic Relief has run its own Tech for Good funding programme since 2015, investing in pioneering campaigns and inspiring charities and not for profit organisations to use tech to help others.

Although many of those projects are in the UK a large part of their work is focused on tackling poverty in sub-Saharan Africa. Africa has many diverse communities with unique challenges and increased access to mobile phones and the internet is providing exciting opportunities.

The Tech4Good Awards have been running for six years and several of our finalists have been delivering support to people in the same areas of Africa – such as What3words, eWaterpay and BuffaloGrid, winner of the BT Ingenious Award

This new Award brings those threads together and gives us a chance to inspire more individuals and organisations to think about how they can use technology to change people’s lives in Africa and around the world.

Tech4Good Awards Goes Global

As well as an exciting new partnership with Comic Relief the Tech4Good for Africa Award also means that international organisations can now enter the Awards, as long as their technology project supports sub-Saharan Africa.

Until now all the other entries had to have a base in the UK. This remains true for the other seven Awards but this new Award gives us a chance to connect with organisations using tech for good from all over the planet.
