Community Impact Award, Winner, 2011

Starting Point is a community-based cybercafé and learning centre that grew out of a fish and chip shop and helped to transform a shopping precinct in Stockport. It is a base for a huge range of learning and training-based activities and a vital ingredient in maintaining a sense of community in the face of economic problems.

Taylors is a family run chip shop in Woodley in Stockport and it is not a coincidence that it was the first chip shop in the country to receive the Investors In People Award. The family is now the driving force behind the development of Starting Point, a social enterprise that has grown into a community-based cybercafé and learning centre that is having a huge impact on the local community, both socially and economically.

It has helped save the sixties shopping precinct where it is based  by running all sorts of new services, such as employment skills, IT sessions and a mentoring scheme that matches young people with their older neighbours.
